What Volunteers Do

Not to be overlooked, local, regional, national and international volunteers are also invaluable members of the team. These include the Wash Wader Ringing Group, comprising volunteers from several European countries. VoluVolunteers conduct night bandingnteers work side by side with researchers during an intensive field season to collect data that will be used in conservation and management decisions for shorebirds and horseshoe crabs and published in peer reviewed scientific publications.

Volunteers help researchers with numerous tasks at various skill levels including daily bird surveys, banding operations, flag making, equipment repair, data entry and more:

The base of operations is Slaughter Beach.  Limited camping or indoor sleeping space may be available on a first come, first served basis for extended stays, and some food will be provided.  Volunteers must attend one training session prior to the field season, and be able to commit to at least four consecutive days of volunteer work.
